Psychiatry
Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental disorders—which includes various affective, behavioral, cognitive and perceptual disorders. Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that treats brain diseases, which are reflected in the thinking and behavior of patients. Psychiatric assessment typically starts with a mental status examination and the compilation of a case history. Psychological tests and physical examinations may be performed, including an occasional use of neuroimaging or other neurophysiological techniques.
Psychiatric treatment applies a variety of modalities, including medication, psychotherapy and a wide range of other techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation. Research and treatment within psychiatry as a whole are conducted on an interdisciplinary basis, sourcing an array of sub-specialties and theoretical approaches.
Neurology is a medical specialty closest to psychiatry as it also deals with the nervous system including brain.
Modern psychiatry is a booming medical field which is able to help many patients return to normal life and it helps to alleviate their suffering. Unfortunately, psychiatry sometimes struggles with disparagement by other medical fields and a distorted view of the uninformed people who do not realize that tomorrow may well become a psychiatric patient.
